Mission Statement
 
The Chicano Latino Alumni Association (CLAA) is committed to maintaining Cal’s tradition of academic excellence through diversity, by providing a mechanism for all to network as professionals, and share ideas and resources that will foster stewardship and mentorship for Chicano/Latino students. We strive to create an expanding force of Cal Chicano/Latino alumni throughout the state, including international contracts, who are committed to maintaining ties with the larger Cal community, as well as provide valuable support to Cal’s efforts in recruiting and graduating Chicano/Latino students.

Gary E. Och manages a Pasadena-based law firm that handles employment and other litigation matters for individuals and businesses in state and federal court, at both the trial court and appellate levels.  He primarily litigates cases involving allegations of wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage and hour issues, and other employment-related claims.

 

An effective and resourceful attorney and counselor at law, Mr. Och also has significant experience advising clients on a full range of employment issues arising in the workplace, including discipline, terminations, layoffs, leaves of absence, disability accommodation, investigations of employee misconduct, and wage and hour compliance.  He is a member of the Employment Law sections of both the Los Angeles County Bar and California State Bar Association.  

 

Previously, Mr. Och served as a research attorney to the Hon. Thomas W. Stoever, Judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, and performed a summer clerkship with the Hon. J. Michael Byrne, Judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court.  Mr. Och also completed a judicial externship with the Hon. Earl Johnson, Jr., Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District.

 

A graduate of Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, Mr. Och was Articles Editor for Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Journal and served as President of the Loyola Law School Student Bar Association.  Mr. Och received his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley.

 
Rene Licon '92
Finance Chair
 
Rene Licon is a Certified Financial Planner practitioner who maintains a private practice in Fullerton, California.  With over thirteen years in the financial services industry, Mr. Licon has helped many small business owners and individuals with their retirement and estate planning needs.  In addition, Mr. Licon currently serves as Executive Director for the California Chapter of Air Conditioning Contractors of America (CAL-ACCA), a trade association dedicated to improving the operating environment for HVAC contractors in California.
 
As a volunteer, Mr. Licon dedicates his time and energy within his community by being active in numerous non-profit organizations.  Presently, he serves as Co-Chair of Finance for the UC Berkeley Chicano Latino Alumni Association, Board Member for the Hispanic Outreach Taskforce, Board Member for SPIRITT Family Services and Advisory Board Member for the Urban Education Partnership in Los Angeles.

Mr. Licon received his Bachelors degree in Political Economy from UC Berkeley.

 
Ana Lilia Barraza '95
Communications Chair
 
Ana Lilia Barraza has spent more than a decade working with educational, community based and non-profit organizations in Central and Southern California. Ms. Barraza has also worked as a radio journalist and producer for Radio Bilingüe for nine years.
 
Currently, she is the Associate Director of Communications for Whittier College, a private Liberal Arts four-year college. Whittier College has the distinction of being categorized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Here, she is responsible organizing public relations efforts on behalf of the college.
 
Prior to her current position, Ms. Barraza worked for LA CAUSA YouthBuild, an educational and youth leadership development organization based in East Los Angeles. Among other duties, she coordinated grant writing, marketing, and outreach efforts for  the organization. Before that, she worked at KUBO Radio Bilingüe in the Imperial Valley, where she established a youth radio training program.
 
She volunteers her time in the community working with marganizeld youth of color and seniors. Presently, she serves as Co-Chair of Publicity for the UC Berkeley Chicano Latino Alumni Association.
 
Ms. Barraza hold a Master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a Bachelor’s degree in Chicano Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
