The UC Berkeley Chicano Latino Alumni Association held its 5th Annual Awards and Scholarship Brunch on Sunday, June 7, 2009. CLAA honored educational leader and Berkeley alumna Monica Garcia with its 2009 Community Leader Award and recent graduate Perla Flores '09, student leader and CLAA’s first scholarship, recipient with its 2009 Scholar Award.

“We are thrilled to honor Ms. Garcia who has been a crusader for change in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She strives to provide students with equal opportunities to prepare for life after high school and her amazing efforts support CLAA’s goal of promoting Chicano/Latino students in their pursuit of higher education,” said CLAA Board President Lupe Figueroa.

CLAA's 2nd Annual Holiday Mixer and Toy Drive was held on December 10 at Tierra Mia Coffe, owned by Cal graduate Ulysses Romero '99.

A number of alums joined us for a bit of conversation, pastries, and  Latin-inspired coffee in this wonderfully comfortable setting.

Toys were donated to Nuevo Amanecer Latino Children's Services,  a Bilingual Latino, profoundly multicultural, California non-profit organization created to provide children and their families with quality educational and family-based treatment services while improving the children's quality of life.

In April the UC Berkeley Chicano Latino Alumni Association (CLAA) held its 4th Annual Awards and Scholarship Brunch at Luminarias Restaurant. CLAA honored three Latino Cal Footbal Legends: Coach Joe Kapp '60, Hank Olguin '59 and David Ortega '89. We raised nearly $20,000 that will go toward providing need-based scholarships to incoming and current Cal students.
