ADRIAN ALEX REAL


Adrian was born and raised in California’s San Fernando Valley.  He is the youngest of four brothers and the first in his family to graduate from a community college and transfer to a four-year university.  Adrian is currently majoring in English.


ANA CANCINO


Ana is a proud native of Mexico, the daughter of a housekeeper, and a future chemist.  She aspires to provide better health alternatives by improving the production of medicine.  During the school year, she is an active member of the Biology and Chemistry Scholars Programs, the Professional Development Program and the Cal Women’s Rugby Team.  During the summer she takes on part-time jobs cleaning houses and likes to read novels.


CHANTIRI RAMIREZ


Chantiri is from Queretaro, Mexico and moved to Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 10.  She is a freshman at Cal and is considering a double major in psychology and political science.  During the school year, Chantiri is involved with The Alumni Achievement Program, the I Can program, Trenza, RISE (Raising Immigrant Scholars through Education), and an upcoming documentary project with her DeCal class RISE (Racism and Inequality in Structures of Education).  Chantiri is very grateful for being selected as a recipient of the Chicano Latino Alumni Scholarship and expressed, “There are no words to express my gratitude to the supporters of this program; it is motivating to know there are people out there who want me to succeed.”


ITZAYANA GARCIA


Itzayana was born in Jalisco, Mexico moved to California at the age of four.  Before attending UC Berkeley, she graduated as Salutatorian of her class and participated in various extracurricular activities including band, tennis, and volunteered in a rehabilitation center.  Itzayana is the first in her family to attend college and is pursuing a degree in Public Health in hopes of increasing health access among minority communities, as well as reduce language barriers that exist in the healthcare system.  At Cal, Itzayana is involved with RISE (Rising Immigrant Scholars through Education), Trenza, and the Biology Scholars Program.  “I am very thankful for the scholarship I have been awarded, it will definitely take some of the financial pressure off, and allow me to focus on my studies.”

MIRIAM GUERRERO


Miriam is from Queretaro, Mexico and immigrated to the U.S. at the age five.  She is a second year student at UC Berkeley and is pursuing a major in Public Health with a minor in Spanish.  Upon graduation, Miriam intends to pursue medical school and looks forward to improving access to quality health care for underrepresented communities.  “Everyone is entitled to high quality health-care,” she said, “regardless of their ethnic and economic background.”

RUBEN MOJICA


Ruben is a native of Michoacán, Mexico and grew up in Colusa, California.  He is a first-year student pursuing a double major in Business Administration and Environmental Economics and Policy, with a minor in Spanish Language and Literature.  Ruben is a member of various on-campus groups, such as the University of California Rally Committee (UCRC), California Public Interest Research Group (CalPIRG), and Latino Business Students Association (LBSA).  He also participates in Tae Kwon Do and plays tennis, soccer, and baseball.  Upon finding out he was selected as a scholarship recipient, Ruben said, “I would like to thank everyone involved in the Chicano Latino Alumni Association for making Cal that much better!”

ZAIRA MONTSERRAT HERNANDEZ


Zaira was born in Mexico and moved to the U.S. at the age of 11 not knowing a word of English.  With perseverance and commitment, she worked hard to master the language.  She quickly went from being an English as a Second Language student to an Advanced Placement student in Literature.  Zaira is a freshman at UC Berkeley and is pursuing a major in Communications and a minor in Art. She stated, “My passion for education, zest for knowledge and this scholarship are my tools for transforming my dreams into reality.”
